In the 1930s, photographers working for the Farm Security Administration (FSA) captured unforgettable images of human fortitude in the face of despair. Nebraska photographer Bill Ganzel set out in the late 1970s to find and re-photograph Dust Bowl survivors for a book and exhibition. The Dust Bowl combines FSA photographs and Ganzel’s interviews to create an eloquent story of human perseverance.

Letters, news and packages from home unite families, boost morale and in wartime, elevate the ordinary to the extraordinary. The traveling version of the National Postal Museum’s permanent exhibition, “Mail Call” explores the history of America’s military postal system, and examines how even in today’s era of instant communication, troops overseas continue to treasure mail delivered from home.

On February 28 - March 2, Grapevine’s Hilton DFW Lakes Executive Conference Center will host TEXPEX 2014, an annual stamp show presented in North Texas as a part of the American Philatelic Society’s (APS) World Series of Philately. TEXPEX 2014 will launch a philatelic experience of air and space with an appearance by Mercury 13 astronaut candidate Wally Funk, prolific stamp artist Chris Calle, and Cheryl Ganz, Chief Curator of Philately at the Smithsonian National Postal Museum and Lead Curator of the William H. Gross Stamp Gallery.

Celebrating the migration of the monarch butterfly, the day begins with a Butterfly Costume Parade. This year, the parade will follow a brand new route, starting at East Wall and Jenkins Streets (across from City Hall) and ending at the Grapevine Botanical Gardens at Heritage Park.

Children and pets are invited to wear their favorite butterfly costume for the Parade. Registration for the Costume Parade begins at 8:45 a.m., with the Parade beginning at 10 a.m. followed by live butterfly releases and butterfly events.
